There was a time when I’d make occasional visits to the Big Island, and I’d sometimes fill my time shooting some portraits. I happened to get acquainted with Leina prior to my visit in October of 2007, and she was interested in doing a senior portrait session. I came up with an idea to shoot in her garage, but shortly before my arrival at her home in Hilo, I was informed that the conditions weren’t ideal. So, we had to come up with another plan.
We did a quick brainstorm at her house while it was raining outside (it’s Hilo, after all, and that was part of the reason the garage appealed to me), and I eventually came up with the idea to do some shooting at a local junkyard. Leina was also an avid hobbyist in photography, and I told her to bring some of her toy cameras. She’s quite an artist, actually; after graduation, Leina attended art school in San Francisco.
Leina was a good sport. While the skies cleared, it was really humid. And I got mauled by mosquitoes big time. In the end, it was all worth it, though.
What’s next?
- If you know anyone who’s interested in creative location portrait sessions, I make myself available for a limited amount of these sessions each year

Nice! LOVE the one with her all broken like a mannequin.
